Inspecting and Replacing AED Pads on the Mediana A16

Proper maintenance of your Mediana A16 AED is essential, and one of the most important components to regularly check is the electrode pads. Below, we explain how to safely inspect, remove, and replace the AED pads, ensuring your device remains emergency-ready at all times.

Accessing the AED Pads

To access the pads, simply open the AED cover. The pads are pre-installed and neatly tucked inside the unit. If the pads are expired or have been used, they need to be replaced immediately.

How to Remove the Pads

  • Grasp the orange base of the pad connector.
  • Gently wiggle it upwards to release the entire pad unit.
  • This includes the main connector plug which fits into a specific section within the AED.

Ensure the two alignment pins on the pad connector line up perfectly with the matching shape inside the AED before reinserting new pads.

Visual and Physical Inspection

Before replacing or reinstalling the pads, always conduct a quick inspection:

  • Run your fingers down the length of the pad cable to check for any physical damage or wear.
  • Inspect the seal where the cables enter the foil packaging – ensure it’s not damaged, discoloured, or loose.
  • Look for tears, nicks, or openings in the packaging – pads must remain sealed until use.

Never open the AED pads unless you are responding to an actual emergency. Exposure to air may dry out the adhesive, causing the pads to lose their stickiness and function improperly during use.

Check the Expiry Date

Pad sets include an expiry date marked on the pull tab and also on the packaging. Always check the date and ensure you are using in-date pads.

Important Note on Compatibility

The Mediana A16 uses universal electrode pads suitable for both adult and paediatric patients. There is no need for two separate sets. However, it is vital to only use genuine Mediana pads to ensure proper functionality. Avoid using imitation or third-party pads, as these may not work correctly with the unit.

Reinstalling the Pads

  • Ensure the connector is aligned – look for two holes and a rectangle in the socket.
  • Push the connector firmly into place.
  • Visually check everything is seated correctly before closing the cover.

Final Checks and Readiness

After reinstalling the pads:

  • Turn the AED on to confirm the device is functioning normally.
  • The status display will show any faults, including pad connection issues.
  • Once verified, close the lid, making sure no cables are trapped.

When the lid is securely fastened, the AED is once again ready for use in an emergency.
